  • The Location

Playa del Carmen is a city located along the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico and is a popular tourist area in eastern Mexico. Originally a small fishing town, tourism to Playa del Carmen began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel and world famous scuba diving destination.

Small enough to explore on foot, Playa del Carmen has a relaxed, yet cosmopolitan feel, with a variety of hotels, shops and restaurants ranging from causal to upmarket.
Tourist activity in Playa del Carmen centres on Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, a pedestrian walkway located just one or two blocks inland from the beach. Fifth Avenue is lined with hundreds of shops, bars and restaurants.

Playa is a popular jumping-off point for day trips to Mayan ruins such as Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza. There are gorgeous beaches to visit and a passenger ferry that makes frequent runs to Cozumel.

The rescue centre and clinic is a short 30 peso taxi ride or 5 pesos bus ride from the accommodation.

The location is second to none when it comes to places to visit and things to do. In the main area of Playa del Carmen are an abundance of tour operators who can offer activities. Some of the things you can do within a day include sightseeing, snorkelling, swimming in a cenote (underground cave), discovering the Aztec and Mayan cultures by visiting historical places, ruins, jungles and beaches.

For the adventurous you can go zip lining, rappelling, kayaking, reef or wreck diving and cave snorkelling,

There are many 'eco' theme parks and dolphinariums of which O2E advise against visiting. Even though they promote nature, the animals are caught from the wild and held in captivity for entertainment purposes. Dolphins are rounded up in the ocean on a regular basis and placed in sea parks, of which only a few survive. Others are forced to live in pods, or groups that are not by natural selection, thereby many animals are attacked, abused and killed by other dolphins.

Akumal is a fabulous place where you can swim with green sea turtles in the ocean as they feed on the sea grass on the ocean floor. Just ensure that you keep your distance and don't feed them or harrass them.

In Quintana Roo, there are many ruins of ancient Aztec civilizations. One example is Coba, which is located around two lagoons. The bulk of its construction is said to have been built about 500 to 900 with a series of elevated stone and plaster roads radiating from the central site to various smaller sites near and far. The site contains several large temple pyramids, the tallest, in what is known as the Nohoch Mul group of structures, being some 42 metres (138 ft) in height. Nohoch Mul is the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan peninsula. Coba is estimated to have had some 50,000 inhabitants (and possibly significantly more) at its peak of civilization, and the built up area extends over some 80 km. Other spectacular ruins worth a visit are Tulum (70 kms from Playa del Carmen) and Chichen Itza which is situated inland.
